Meizu is a little known Chinese smartphone manufacturer that is about to become a global sensation. The company this week made what is thus far the boldest statement in smartphone design when they unveiled the what they call first seamless and uninterrupted smartphone called the Meizu Zero.
The Meizu Zero is the first smartphone to have not buttons and no connecting ports on it. By this I mean, the phone does not have a power on/off button, volume buttons, a speaker grill, a USB port or even a SIM card Tray. By design this phone has not a single opening on it.
If this is not the boldest statement a smartphone maker has made then I don’t know what it, but, with all these omissions of components, the phone is still able to deliver all features of a conventional phone using an array of features:
Touch for volume
In the place of volume and power buttons the Zero phone uses what is called a touch capacitive panel that vibrates when you touch it to provide a haptic feedback to create the sensation of touching something, which in this case is turning the volume up or down or even powering it on and off.
Sound with no speaker
Since there is no speaker grill anywhere on the phone, Meizu’s Zero produces sound by vibrating parts of the phone to produce sound such as the area around the ear piece and around the display of the phone for much louder sounds like music, video playback and the ringtone.
Connectivity
The Zero has no ports and that makes it a prime candidate for wireless-ness. We are all aware that the headphone jack is mostly dead and it its place is bluetooth. The Meizu zero uses the latest level of bluetooth technology called bluetooth 5 which is said to be faster than what we know today. The phone will also strictly use wireless charging since there is no where to plug a cable in. There is still a bit of skepticism about the reliability of having only wireless charging as a charging option but time will tell.
Besides, all these bold features the phone comes with some of the industry standard features such as a 5.6 inch HD AMOLED display, a fingerprint scanner that is placed on the screen, a 20MP front facing camera with face unlock and a dual camera setup at the back with one camera donning 20 MP while the other has 12MP. It is also water proof and can survive being immersed in water to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.
The company s yet to announce other features such as the battery size, RAM and internal storage capacities. For now all we can do is wait and think about what such a design means for the future of mobile technology. Do you think this kind of design will stay or will it pass like an unenthusiastic breeze?
