Get up to speed with 5G

You have heard of 4G, right? If you haven’t, we’ll let you catch up because while 4G has been the pinnacle of communication speeds in the recent years, it is on its way to being replaced by a new, better and faster generation of data transfer protocols called 5G, which is just a fancy abbreviation for 5th Generation.

5G is set to replace 4G as the industry standard for data transfer both over the internet and in telecommunications and I am here to let you in on what to expect when we eventually get to interact with 5G.

4G connections we are used to are able to transfer data at speeds of 300 Mbps for down links and about 70 Mbps for up links, these figures apply to a really good connection which is common on a large scale like for a company with a large network. The 4G connections on smartphones however, come in at speeds of around 6 to 25 Mbps which in all essence is pretty fast, if you have downloaded a picture, song or video on a 4G internet connections, you would know. 5G promises to be a lot faster but just, how fast will it be?

5G at its basic for user experience is expected to transfer data at speeds of 1 Gbps (capable of downloading a 1GB file in under 5 seconds) and upto 20 Gbps for much larger levels. This speed comes with a much lower latency than its predecessor. Latency is the time it takes to transfer data from on point to another. Before you get excited, it is worth noting that it is going to take a bit of time until we can have 5G connections in our homes and even on handheld devices. This can be owed to the fact that even the makers of this technology have not been able to grasp its full potential. There are still kinks that need to be ironed out but when they are fixed, you can expect the internet to get a lot faster.
